If you want to stay focused in college, you’ll need to make a few changes to the way you study. It might even require you to alter where and when you choose to study as well because distractions can come from anywhere, at any time and when you know what the negative influences are around you, it can be easier to eliminate them from your life. So when it comes to kicking those college distractions to the curb, here are some of the most effective steps you can take to get all of your work done on deadline.
Establish Your Location
Everyone needs a place to call their own, especially when it comes time to crack open the books and get to work. So finding the right location to do your studying will require you to identify a place that is quiet, free from the interference of outside distractions whether it’s your electronic devices or dorm roommates who are a little too loud.
Shut Off Your Devices
Speaking of your electronics, shut down your phone, tablet, the TV, anything that might take your focus off of your studies and on to something else. Don’t worry about checking Instagram or Facebook, set those things aside until it’s time to take a break or when your project is complete. Music is fine if it can help you concentrate and won’t distract you from the assignment at hand.
Get into a Routine
One of the smartest things you can do to keep your concentration is to establish a routine and stay with it on a consistent basis. Part of this requires finding the work area that will make it easier for you to focus but other factors like the time of day and how long you study can also improve your productivity by making you maintain your focus until your work is finished.
Take Breaks
Don’t try to do it all at once. Schedule some designated breaks during study sessions and long periods of homework time so you’re not burned out. During those breaks get a little exercise, go for a walk, ride a bicycle, or just step away from your desk and do something to take your mind off your work. But don’t stray for too long or you may not get back to what you need to finish.
Learn How to Say “No”
Distractions can come when you least expect and with so many things going on around you at Chico State University, friends and activities can easily pull you away from what you’re trying to accomplish. That’s why you need to learn how to say “no” when roommates come around to get you out the door for extra-curricular hijinks. When you say no now, you’re freeing up your time later to enjoy all that college has to offer…after your studying is done.
